A member of the Poppy family, Bloodroot is a charming woodland wildflower with very unusual foliage and flower. The early spring flower rises from the center of its single curled leaf, opening in full sun, and closing at night. Bloodroot can grow up to 12 inches tall with a single lobed leaf on each stem. It is found growing in medium to moist shade along rocky slopes in woods, in ravines, and along bluffs. The red juice from the underground was used by Native Americans as a dye for baskets, clothing, and war paint, as well as for insect repellent.
The plant had been used by Native Americans for generations in its natural form and formed an important part of herbal medicine. You may not recognize the name bloodroot right away, but depending on where you are in the world, you may know this perennial herbaceous plant as redroot, bloodwort, or even tetterwort.
The generic name, from the Latin sanguinarius, means bleeding.Planting Tips: We recommend planting ephemerals in early fall while the soil is still warm, or in early spring. Spring installations will have some time to develop before summer dormancy, but will not produce flowers the first year.
An early fall planting allows the roots time to establish properly before winter, and gives the plants a stronger start the following spring. This woodland species appreciates a generous application of leaf mulch in the fall.
