Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Envy
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Al holding Envy in his true form Envy - 'Rocking is actually a self-stimulation, often subconscious movement, proven to reduce stress and/or anxiety. Most commonly associated with autism, OCD, and PTSD.think about that for a while.'- Susan Sader. Mar 21, 2016 I admit that after Envy killed Hughes and Mustang vowed to avenge him I did want Envy to die at his hands. But the true answer to this question would be that Mustang does NOT kill Envy. The only homunculus he kills is Lust, and that because she ha.
Edward and Alphonse Elric's reckless disregard for alchemy's fundamental laws ripped half of Ed's limbs from his body and left Al's soul clinging to a cold suit of armor. To restore what was lost, the brothers scour a war-torn land for the Philosopher's Stone, a fabled relic which grants the ability to perform alchemy in impossible ways. The Elrics are not alone in their search; the corrupt State Military is also eager to harness the artifact's power. So too are the strange Homunculi and their shadowy creator. The mythical gem lures exotic alchemists from distant kingdoms, scarring some deeply enough to inspire murder. As the Elrics find their course altered by these enemies and allies, their purpose remains unchanged – and their bond unbreakable.

“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy’s First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world’s one, and only truth.” quoted by Alphonse Elric.
After years and years of pursuing, my husband has won the battle to get me into watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. And I wish my Pride (heh, heh… more on that later) hadn’t interfere in this. It was such a treat. Whether you prefer the original Fullmetal Alchemist or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, this is a classic that should be shown for veteran viewers and newcomers to the anime world. I’ll get into my reasoning why in a bit, but I’ll be focusing on Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Be warned of spoilers.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows the original story line from the manga, meaning that we dive in more detail of events, but you get a better understanding of the events that take place.
The story sets place in Amestris where we meet our main characters: brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric. What seemed to be a normal childhood for our protagonists, their father who goes by the name of Hohenheim, one day leaves his family behind. This gives the boys a great growing of love for learning alchemy and using it for the good. Sometime later their mother, Trisha Elric, passes away due to illness leaving the boys in the care of Pinako Rockbell and her granddaughter, Winry Rockbell. Under the guidance of Izumi Curtis, they take the opportunity to grow and power their alchemy and themselves by being left alone on an island for a month. Edward, the older brother, brings up the idea that they can bring their mother back and this action is called Human Transmutation; which is a taboo to perform as there is no clear understanding of it.
This is where the quote from the beginning comes into play: This is the FIRST law of alchemy.
With Human Transmutation, you must offer something in exchange. Both brothers together perform the taboo. The transmutation failed as a creature that is not human has appeared in the circle. The result of their actions were Edward lost his left leg while Alphonse lost his body completely. Edward in complete shock and in total denial of everything that has gone wrong with the Human Transmutation, Edward performs the transmutation again, drawing a mark on an empty suit of armor to bring his brother back. The price: Edward lost his right arm. Edward receives automail prosthetics from the Rockwells that replace his missing limbs. The brothers move to Central Command in the Capital City to become State Alchemists, not before the Elric brothers burnt their childhood home as there is no turning back.

During their journey, they come across numerous of characters including the devious Homunculi named after each of the Seven Deadly Sins – Greed, Pride, Wrath, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth and Envy; they are working and taking orders from their “Father” as Edward and Alphonse are in search for The Philosopher’s Stone which there is an old legend that it can give the brothers their original bodies back.
I first struggled with the original Fullmetal Alchemist series because of it’s slow pacing and the anticipation was just dragging and it got boring for me. Don’t get me wrong: Fullmetal Alchemist was great, but the pacing wasn’t to my liking, ending with me dropping the series. My husband figured it out and he came up with the solution of giving Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood a try. The pacing was still a slow in the beginning but it was picking up quickly. After about episode 50, the wait was totally worth it and the slow pacing was important to the story as they gave every detail possible of everyone’s backstory. The emotion and the feeling that I felt was insanely good! And when we learned about other characters and their sad history, such as Hohenheim and understanding the truth, I kept saying to my husband “I take it back” and you grow to like the characters. There has to be at least one character that is a favorite; if you finish the series without one favorite character, then you obviously didn’t pay attention to this series. My husband’s favorite is Edward and mine is Alphonse. Even during the times were the situation was supposed to be serious, Edward and Alphonse somehow make it funny, especially during a fight and if someone calls Edward short or anything like that, he flips out on his enemies because they call him short. While these villains deserve what they got, the two Homunculi that I felt bad for the most were Gluttony and Envy.
HEAR ME OUT WITH ENVY!
We all have some kind of sin in ourselves. Gluttony didn’t know any better. My husband and I said that in a sense he was like a little kid that was just doing what Father told him to do and when he got swallowed by Pride (literally), my eyes just widen as yes, Gluttony may have been bad but he’s not like Envy or Lust or Pride or the others. Greed, he was growing on me until he got killed by the main antagonist, Father. Don’t let Sloth fool you; Wrath is exactly what he is.
Now, I know I have a lot of explaining to do. Envy’s main power is Shape Shifting to whoever he wants. Envy used that power on everyone’s favorite soldier, Mae Hughes, and disguised himself as his wife, Gracia, and shot him down which gives us the most heartbreaking scene in anime history; it makes grown men cry. It’s not so much as the funeral happening… but what Mae’s daughter, Elicia asks her mother, “Why are they putting dirt on Daddy?” This triggered Roy Mustang as not only was he working closely with Mae, he was his closest friend. Roy finds Mae’s killer and uses his power of flame alchemy and incinerate countless times on Envy weakening him that he has been reduced to his true form – which is a tiny, green, little lizard creature with it’s mouth like a sucker from a leech. In the scene where he was confronted by Edward, Scar, Riza Hawkeye and Roy Mustang all together, he was wanting to see everyone fight each other but instead, their mutual alliance throws Envy in such confusion and angst. Edward realizes that it was Envy that was envious of our heroes that they have received friendships and kindness to others where the Homunculi have shown none of it to Envy and to the others. I had a bit of teary eye in this scene because if there’s one of the sins that I can say that I have is envy. I can understand the wants that others have, even if they are worst than we are, yet they still have it. Envy blinds us from what is important to us and that is the love of our friends and family that is always there for us. Especially our time of need now. The screech of Envy’s cry broke my heart. Envy can’t be forgiven on what he’s done to Mae Hughes, that we can all agree on.
Doing research on the endings between the original Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood – I have to stick with my guns and say that Brotherhood gave a much better ending. Everyone that we love and grow attached to are alive and moving on with their lives. Alphonse detached his soul from the armor so Edward can get his right arm back to finish off Father in a final battle, as Edward gave up the power to never perform alchemy again in an exchange for his brother who is back in his original human body that he lost.
My Thoughts – A story of redemption and vengeance, this anime can grow and age well with you. The animation is beautiful and more advanced compared to it’s predecessor. The characters are so much fun to enjoy and you want them in your presence. One character we like to have fun with is Alex Armstrong. He always flexes and sparkles. I can’t tell you how many times I have to tell him to “Stop Sparkling!” and my husband always yells out “No!” He is playful character but once he got in a fight with the Homunculus Sloth… you will want him to sparkle again.
I love the Openings that come to play as it sets the atmosphere on what we will be experiencing. It’s not just the songs, it’s the actual opening itself where we meet the characters and understand their motives. I’m actually playing the Opening 4 song while writing this as we speak. Any newcomers into the anime world, I would suggest to give a watch to this show. It’s 64 episodes long, but the build up and the anticipation makes it worth the wait and you will enjoy this show.
